While Southwest executives have won well-deserved praise for the company's fuel-hedging policy that has saved millions of dollars, they have used other strategies to keep costs in line that attract much less notice. During the first two months of 2006, U.S. jet fuel spot prices averaged $1.81 per gallon, which is high but not as bad as in the final months of 2005, when fuel topped $2.15 per gallon. Amid the high prices, South-west's fuel-hedging strategy has clearly been an unprecedented success.
