摘要

THE AEROSPACE AND DEFENSEindustries are usually described as staid. And while legacy company names can be and have been subsumed, usually due to acquisition, it is rare that new names become preeminent in the public's mind. Now that could be changing. A cadre of small companies is increasingly standing out for contract wins, especially in defense, thanks to the growing federal budget. Some observers see them as minor mid-tier players, but Steven Grundman, the George Lund Fellow for Emerging Defense Challenges at the Atlantic Council, calls them the "big smalls." Usually with headcounts measured in the hundreds, or possibly thousands, of employees, and with annual revenue falling under $2 billion, they are almost a class of their own. "These are not small companies . . . but they are quite distinct from the big, diversified companies," notes Grundman, who recently spotlighted a few for inclusion in his Captains of Industry panel series.
