FROM COCKPITS TO FACTORYfloors and repair hangars, an alarm is sounding about personnel shortages in aerospace and defense-in terms both of numbers and skillsets. Regional airlines are canceling flights due to lack of available crew; Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems say 737 assembly has slowed in part due to worker shortages in the supply chain; and the Aeronautical Repair Station Association cites difficulty finding technical talent as one of the biggest strategic threats facing the maintenance industry.Yet long-term, perhaps the greatest area of concern is the ability to fill top corporate slots. While the pilot shortage, maintainer "bathtub" and mismatch of skilled workers with open manufacturing jobs are real, automation, artificial intelligence and other technologies are being rolled out to help close those gaps.
