U.S. federal agencies are advancing a plan to replace the nation's short- and long-range surveillance and weather radar networks using proceeds from a future, multibil-lion-dollar spectrum auction under the FAA-led Spectrum Efficient National Surveillance Radar (SENSR) program. Industry responses to a request for information (RFI) the FAA released in late June were due back on Aug. 30. According to the RFI, a cross-agency government team will use industry feedback in a feasibility assessment to identify potential radar-system solutions and refine cost, schedule and performance requirements.After completing the assessment, the team will release a screening information request (SIR)-or request for proposals-in 2020, and conduct an operational capability demonstration to evaluate proposed systems in a representative environment. The four agencies-the FAA, Defense Department, Department of Homeland Security and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-expect to make a contract award in December 2021.Though the team's "primary objective is to make a single award," the SIR will include an option to downselect proposals from two or more companies, which would delay the contract award by 14 months.
