German industry is nurturing an ambition to develop a family of weapons to challenge U.S. dominance in low-cost air-launched precision munitions. Missile manufacturer BGT is exploring a glide-weapons family concept around its high-speed pene-trator (Hope) and high-speed munition designs (Hosbo), and is aiming to begin a three-year risk-reduction program. Costs for this phase would be shared between BGT and the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB). The BWB's center for weapons and technology, WTD 91, has already conducted drop trials of a penetrator warhead that would form the basis of Hope. Two safe-separation trials of a penetrator were carried out mid-2003 from a German air force Tornado strike aircraft. The BGT work is in response to an air force requirement for a penetrator weapon. Rocket-sled tests of the penetrator have also been performed.
