The ability of the U.S. defense industry to support the military's warfighting goals is under review, with signs emerging that the Pentagon needs to strengthen niche areas to preserve its supplier options. Earlier this year, the Defense Dept. began to look at its supplier base through a lens focused on operational effects, rather than just technology, and this month the first of five assessments is slated for release. The initial study analyzes the industry supporting battle-space awareness, with a heavy emphasis on the tools needed for strategic and tactical surveillance. The report also examines sensor suites on tactical platforms, since they can be part of the military's intelligence-collection efforts. Reports on command and control, force application, protection and focused logistics are to follow through 2005. Within each assessment, the Penta- gon tried to identify the most critical industrial capabilities in which the U.S. needs to be "ahead or way ahead" to preserve the military's combat edge, says Suzanne D. Patrick, who heads the Defense Dept.'s industrial policy office.
