The U.S. Navy is testing a ship-board-based GPS system that will give pilots precision, jam-free guidance for automatic carrier landings and will also replace Tacan, allowing carriers to operate more covertly. Navy test pilots made the first automatic landings in July in an F/A-18 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
