AlliedSignal's T55-714A powerplant has demonstrated and exceeded its expected payload and fuel consumption benefits in tests performed last month at Ft. Campbell, Ky. An Army CH-47D helicopter, operating at a takeoff gross weight of 49,000 lb. and powered by two of the engines, demonstrated that it could carry an Ml98 howitzer and its crew of four on a delivery mission where the operating radius was 101 naut. mi. Using flight data and adjusting ambient conditions to 95F/4,000-ft. altitude, the aircraft could have theoretically flown a radius of 111 naut. mi., officials said. Army requirements call for the reengined aircraft to have a 50-naut.-mi. combat radius under these conditions, although 100 naut.
