摘要

Libraries as we understand the term - that is, collections of written materials - had to wait for the appearance of the "Gutenberg galaxy" in the late fifteenth century. Printing made it possible to obtain large numbers of books on the greatest variety of subjects. Naturally, institutions that relied on scholarship and information about precepts and past events - for example, ecclesiastic and princely courts - were the first to establish "libraries" for pragmatic purposes. Wealthy individuals from all walks of life followed suit in collecting books related to their specific interests and tastes. Not surprisingly, monarchs and princes, temporal and spiritual, were the driving spirits in creating libraries which, as a consequence of revolutionary and secularizing trends, became the nuclei of contemporary state and public libraries.
