Sugar production has developed into a highly sophisticated process since the days when ocean going sailing ships raced across the Atlantic Ocean from the West Indies to Britain with their valuable cargoes of raw cane sugar. In those days, the deckhands and dockers 'scraped the bottom of the barrel' for a taste of a rare and exotic commodity which only royalty and the wealthy could afford. Cane, which had been grown in the West Indies since 1493, remained the only source of sugar until 1748. Then a German scientist, Andreas Marggraf, discovered how to produce sugar crystals from sugar beet.rnHowever, another 52 years elapsed before the first beet sugar factory was built (in Germany in 1799) and it was not until the 1920's that Britain established its own 'home grown' sugar industry - now firmly established as one of the most efficient in the world.rnSince then an unwavering commitment to research, development and education has resulted in changedrnagronomic practices and the introduction of new, higher yielding, varieties and more efficient extraction procedures has benefited everyone involved in the industry.rnEach year, Britain's farmers grow around nine million tonnes of sugar beet from which British Sugar produces about 1.4 million tonnes of white granulated sugar. But the assumption that the production process ends with the serried ranks of lkg bags of Silver Spoon granulated sugar on supermarket shelves, could not be further from the truth.
