As North American electric utilities implement more and more data-driven operational solutions, the applications used to leverage this data become more numerous, more complex and more costly to support. As a result, many utilities are readdressing the long held paradigm of owning and operating all critical data systems. Some applications which are directly impacted by Smart Grid implementations, such as billing, meter data management, demand response, and customer engagement portals, can often be hosted internally by the utility or considered for outsourcing to application vendors or select third-party hosting services.
