Austerity drives change... local authorities across the UK are continuing to face pressure to implement extensive budget cuts and make efficiency savings, having faced a 40 percent reduction in funding since 2010. With further reductions announced in the November 2015 spending review, totalling a £6.1bn reduction in the Local Government Central Grant by 2019/20, the pressure on authorities to be more innovative in the design and delivery of their larger budget services is mounting. For those of us immersed in the waste sector, there is little doubt that the level of squeeze on collections, processing and disposal solutions will increase, forcing officers and members alike to face up to very difficult decisions about their local priorities and preferences.
