Early Growth Response of Some Banana Cultivars to Infection with Meloidogyne incognita and Helicotylenchus dihystera

When seven banana cultivars derived from tissue culture technique were screened to determine the biotic effect of the host type on development and reproduction of either Meloidogyne incognita or Helicotylenchus dihystera, the nematodes were found to vary in their densities and behaviour according to the tested cultivars and nematode species. The cultivars Basrai and Poyo ranked as susceptible hosts but Grand Nain, Hindi, Maghrabi, Valery and Williams were highly susceptible to M. incognita. Suitable hosts of H. dihystera comparised die cultivars Maghrabi, Williams, Valery and Basrai but unsuitable hosts contained Hindi, Pyo and Grand Nain. Also, results indicated that growth parameters viz number of leaves, length and weight of both shoots and roots, pseudostem girth and corm girth of all the tested cultivars were signficantly (P ≥ 0.05 and 0.01) reduced by the M. incognita infection as compared to uninoculated plants. Statistical differences (P ≥ 0.05 and 0.01) were found between infected and non-infected plants in some tested parameters as for H. dihystera infection.
