摘要

As director of the department's Professional Writing internship program for more than 25 years, I know firsthand the value of portfolios to students applying for internships and jobs. In the early days, students with majors in art and English were routinely asked to provide samples of their work when applying for professional positions, but students with other majors were not so routinely required to supply this evidence of their expertise. The times, however, have changed. Students from a wide variety of disciplines now assemble such portfolios, spurred in part perhaps by the easy availability of software to facilitate the process. Last fall, in fact, a student from my web design class, with considerable experience in media, told me that one job ad she found suggested that students who did not have such an online presence need not bother to apply. And so, with a grant from my university's General Education Initiative, I have spent the past year morphing my students from print to online portfolios.
