Cross-disciplinary Collaboration Results In Business And Engineering Students' Joint Venture

In the summer of 2006, I took part in a three-person team tasked with the creation and implementation of a pilot course for upper-level engineering and computer science students. Although the original pilot did not become a class, it succeeded well enough to be given a second chance, and I am now part of a new team tasked with the same mission. First, the background: Dean Ben Kelley of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, a few of his faculty members, and several members of the advisory board-alumni now out in the workforce-became concerned that although students received excellent training in how to be engineers, they were not equipped to apply those skills in the marketplace. Student work was neither well designed nor well delivered, despite a curriculum that required separate courses in public speaking in the College of Communication Studies and technical writing in the English Department in the College of Liberal Arts. Meanwhile, an opportunity arose to link upper level engineering and computer science students with business students in a cross-disciplinary collaboration.
