► In 1958, one tempting offer - but possibly not PC nowadays - was the useful Ollson Combined Cigarette Box & Automatic Car-Lighter from Mills & Partners Ltd of Brookwood Road, London. One simple movement extracted a fully lit cigarette at the press of the lid on the device, promising among its features that there was no dangerous glare in the dark. It was available in both 6- or 12-volt models, with a choice of five different colours, for 39/6 (just under £2 today). It also catered for most sizes of cigarettes and kept them fresh, too, because the box itself boasted of being airtight.
