The MD-80, first introduced by McDonnell Douglas in 1980, was long a favorite of passenger carriers looking for a short/medium-range nar-rowbody twinjet. Almost 1,200 units were produced, in five variants accommodating 140 to 170 passengers, before production ended in 1999, just two years after McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. Many are still in operation, but their days are obviously numbered as carriers continue to replace them with the more modern 737NG and A320 family aircraft, and many have already been parked.
