摘要

Data has become a major focus in the field of information library science (ILS), motivated, to a large degree, by national data sharing policies, open access, and the knowledge that underlies the digital data deluge we seek to tame. As a matter of fact, today, it seems nearly impossible to peer through professional library and information science literature, let alone the popular press, without seeing an article or discussion that addresses data-be it big data, data analytics, open data, data sharing and the many interrelated threads and ideas on data. ILS graduate programs are meeting the data trend via curriculum revision, while job descriptions increasingly call for data librarians-both nationally and internationally. These changes can overwhelm, particularly when we consider that 90% of the world's data was generated in the last two years.1 More importantly, change of this scale calls for thoughtful examination and scholarly contextualization, and we find this need met in Christine Borgman's timely book, Big Data, Little Data, No Data (MIT Press, 2015).
