Native American is an inclusive term that refers to all native peoples living in the continental United States as well as Hawaii. Native Americans living in the lower 48 states prefer to be called American Indians while those living in Alaska prefer to be called Native Alaskans. Since most available statistics combine the latter two, I will use both terms as needed. I will not attempt to discuss the status of Native Ha-waiians, except to say that the miserable condition of their lives almost exactly matches that of American Indians and Native Alaskans.
