The regional airline industry is entering a period of transition. The industry, particularly in the U.S., is consolidating as large holding companies gain control of multiple regional airlines. Examples of such large companies include Pinnacle, Republic, and SkyWest. While each follows a somewhat different strategy, they are all essentially looking to take advantage of economies of scale, and insulate themselves as much as possible from the vagaries of the marketplace. At the same time, the relationship between the regionals and their major airline code-share partners is changing. Increasingly, the majors are asking regionals to assume more of the risks and costs involved in operating feeder services for the mainline networks.
