摘要

One of the things discussed in my earlier article 'A profession scattered within an industry' (pp39-41 June CES 2014) is that a profession is bound by rules which are over and above those of the basic law of the land. A profession has its own code of conduct and professional rules - even its own code of ethics. The term 'ethics' is used these days where perhaps in the past the word 'morality' would have been used. Also, it is interesting that in the past the idea of ethics was often used in the singular, i.e. the ethic of public service. Possibly, morality is seen as not quite secular or neutral enough now to be universally accepted. Another interesting aspect of this is that ethics, as a subject, seems to be more capable of being codified in terms of lists of things giving rise to questions requiring a simple answer, i.e. yes or no. Questions of morality, on the other hand, seem to be more searching, far wider and more mysterious.
