A belated 50th anniversary of the invention of the tellurometer was celebrated in Cape Town on 14 May 2009. It hardly seems like 50 years ago that it first appeared and took the profession by storm.rnThe manufacturer is now called Tellumat but the tellurometer is still produced, with the MRA 7 its latest model. This was introduced in 1985 but has developed into a very useful instrument in deep mining. Its use there is an unusual one in that it monitors the position of a cage within a shaft. These cages can carry either personnel or ore and, until recently, there was no direct control of the position within the shaft, other than the number of rotations of the cable drum on the surface. Now, with a unit mounted in the headgear and another on top of the cage, continuous monitoring of the position is possible.
