A public recreation area in Alaska roughly 50 mi northeast of Anchorage designed for skiing and other outdoor sports in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months is under construction in the Talkeetna Mountains thanks to a $6-million Federal Transit Administration grant, strong community support, especially from local ski clubs, and the assistance of a civil engineer who is a former Olympic cross-country skier. The idea for the Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass actually goes back decades to a proposed private development, notes Mike Campfield, P.E., M.ASCE, a civil and environmental engineer in the capital projects department of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the local government that spearheaded the project. But it "wasn't until we got a federal grant and the decision by the borough to do it as a public works project... that something actually happened," explains Campfield, who recently served as the president of the Mat-Su Branch of ASCE's Alaska Section. Before he joined the borough government, Campfield worked for the Anchorage-based engineering firm DOWL HKM, which designed portions of the project.
