Assateague Island, a 60 km long barrier island off the southeastern coast of Maryland, relies on the ocean's sediment, currents, and waves to sustain its geologic integrity. However, since 1935, when jetties were constructed to maintain an inlet between the island and Ocean City, Maryland, sand that would naturally have replenished the island has been trapped behind the stone barriers.
