Over the past year or so, plastic has been in the news for all the wrong reasons and the shocking images in recent episodes of the BBC's Blue Planet II have done nothing to enhance this already tarnished reputation. However, it is critical that the Government and its policy advisors are not tempted into any ill-conceived, populist, knee-jerk response based on emotion, but apply the necessary intellectual rigour to fully understand what is an extremely complex subject and act decisively.
