摘要

The well documented challenges facing Closed Loop Recycling over recent weeks, as well as the insolvency of ECO Plastics - Europe's largest plastic bottle recycler - have led to a much needed debate about the future of plastics recycling in the UK. Whilst the economic issues facing the industry have undoubtedly been exacerbated by the fall in oil prices, the British Plastics Federation Recycling Group (BPFRG) has been arguing for some time that there are fundamental underlying systemic failings, which risk the future of the UK's post consumer plastic recycling sector. Importantly, this is now not just a narrow sector industry debate, it's a story that has reached a much wider audience in the national and international media. Here, the reaction is that it seems inconceivable that an industry which is so demonstrably doing the "right thing" is under so much threat, and whilst the environmental, economic and societal benefits of plastic recycling; resource efficiency; diversion of waste from landfill; the circular economy; creation of "green" jobs; and low carbon manufacturing enjoy such widespread appeal, it is clear that strong political leadership and vision are imperative to create the change necessary to deliver these aspirations.
