During 2009 the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) realised the first part of its ambition to promote sustainable development in the waste management sector and to facilitate global improvements in waste management strategies by publishing and promoting a white paper - Waste and Climate Change. Some two years earlier ISWA had set up a Greenhouse Gas and Sustainable Waste Management Task Force to address the array of global issues related to the waste industry and the environment, particularly greenhouse gas emission and climate change. The white paper was launched at a Waste & Climate Conference held in December 2009 in Copenhagen prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15). The aim of the conference, jointly organised by ISWA and its Danish national member DAKOFA, was to highlight how progressive waste management policies and practices can play an important role in efforts to mitigate climate change.
