With a history of public misconception about waste plants and a hostile attitude from UK environmentalists, can the waste industry get it right for the 21st Century and adopt a more pro-active approach about information in the public realm? The New Technologies Programme has been active in informing industry and stakeholders about the emerging technologies and has given local authorities the technical know how, but how to get that message across to people worried about the impact technologies will have on their lives and environment is a different story and lies with individual authorities. It is through some of the harshest public protests, however, that we can learn how to do it much better this time around.
