The Isle of Man has a long history, beautiful scenery, a thriving finance sector and -since August 2004 - a shiny new energy from waste (EfW) plant. From first discussions to plant hand over, the lead-time has been around 20 years. The Isle of Man's politicians and technical officers opted for proven EfW technology because they felt it was inappropriate to risk reliance on novel or unproven waste management technologies in their already-constrained circumstances. The island has limited space for landfill, little reprocessing capacity for recyclables and not much land for compost application. Electricity generation offered a guaranteed market while the volume reduction of waste from EfW would help conserve landfill void space.
