Brand spanking new, this 40s to 50s era Westinghouse dryer has patiently been waiting to go to work for 50 years. Never used or hooked up; it really belongs in a museum. If you feel 'new old' beats 'new new' then this could be your next new dryer. Thus does Scott McAlpine of Portland, Oregon, try to elicit offers on an American website trading fully functioning retro electrical appliances and parts, from irons and toasters to fridges, dryers and stoves. Visitors to the website are invited to join its 'Old Appliance Club' through which they can place more adverts or read about how vacuum cleaners were invented. But for every Yank hankering after the days of 1930s Bakelite phones and trumpet gramophones, millions of Brits are stuffing redundant Braun hairdryers and Swan toasters from the Thatcher era into the backs of wardrobes. As yet, most are unaware that a solution to their clutter is just around the corner.
