Children don't come cheap: clothes, food, childcare, school trips, expensive teenage tastes - it all adds up. Even the essential equipment for the first few years of a child's life can cost hundreds of pounds. Unsurprisingly, many families rely on hand-me-downs and tour charity shops in search of cheaper second-hand goods. Manufacturers and their associated organisations, meanwhile, like to promote the idea that child safety comes through the purchase of the most up-to-date, safety-guaranteed products. Indeed, there seems to be little support from baby goods manufacturers for repair, refurbishment or safety testing services for parents who do buy second-hand equipment.
