Jane Stephenson began her career in recycling 20 years ago, when she moved to Bristol to work with Avon Friends of the Earth, who were setting up one of the very first kerbside collections in the UK. "We started out initially with some volunteers and some people employed on the youth training programme," At the same time as that was happening, they were working to establish a furniture recycling service as well as a children's scraps stall to re-use commercial waste for educational purposes. These are now well-established businesses in their own right, and methods they used back then in their kerbside recycling scheme, she tells me proudly, are now regarded as best practice. We meet up at a seaside cafe at the front in Torbay, since the Recycling Consortium has a stand at CIWM's Annual Conference and Exhibition, as it has for the last four years. While Jane has seen significant change even in this time, she still feels there is a way to go in the development of a relationship between the wastes industry and not-for-profit recycling groups. "Although we are sometimes perceived as one sector," she says, "there is a great deal of variation in the size and scale and range of activities. But I think we are very good at innovation, taking initiatives and seeing things from a different perspective."
