In her first keynote address given at the end of October to the Green Alliance and Environmental Resources Management (ERM) Forum on the environmental priorities for the Government, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Margaret Beckett, emphasised the "need to tackle how we handle the 400 million tonnes of waste we produce each year" concluding "we must substantially increase reuse, recycling and composting".
