Recently Greece hit the headlines in the international environmental press, as the first State of the European Union that was fined by the European Court of Justice for non-compliance with the EU legislation on waste management. The over £12,000 per day fine, which runs from the 4th of July, relates to the continuing operation of the dump site of Kouroupitos in Crete and the failure of the authorities to find an alternative solution during the past 20 years.
