This article aims to give organisations in the waste management industry a steer towards improving their health and safety systems and their performance. The government expects the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities - the 'regulators' - to adopt a risk-based approach to targeting organisations for inspection. Alongside the code and guidance regulators use, they also publish a list of national priorities - and of specific activities in defined sectors, such as waste and recycling - that are suitable for targeting for proactive inspection.
