Sunscreens help prevent sunburn and may also prevent skin cancer by protecting from ultraviolet-induced DNA damage of the cells. Depending on the mechanism of action, sunscreens may be classified into chemical screens (absorb the UV rays) and physical blockers (reflect or scatter the UV rays). US FDA allowable active ingredients and others approved in Europe and elsewhere; sunscreen vehicles; chemistry and application; ultraviolet radiation; skin types, side effects, measurements of sunscreen protection and of UVA protection, sun protection factor and sun safety formed the highlights of presentation by Dr. P.K. Ghosal.
