Mercerizingis a finishing process for cotton, named after the English scientist and chemist John Mercer, who first suggested in 1844 on the use of caustic soda as a method to improve strength and dyeing properties of cotton. Subsequently in 1989 H. Lowe developed and patented treatment with caustic soda of cotton yarns and fabrics under tension to produce permanent luster, a result of the fiber changing from a twisted to a round shape as in silk fiber. This process has withstood the tests of time and is even today an essential one to produce brilliant and economical medium to dark shades and prints on cotton and its blends. Dr. G.P. Nair has conducted detailed studies on mercerizing and other swelling treatments of cotton for his doctorate under the able guidance of late Dr. P.C. Mehta, a former director of ATIRA. This column will bring into light ,some of his findings, mostly still unpublished, on the fine structural changes taking place in cotton as a result of mercerizing and other industrially important swelling reactions. Even today, heterogeneous acid hydrolysis and swelling treatments of polymers in general and fibers in particular continue to be important. methods not only to produce diversified products but also to understand the super-molecular fine structure of these fibers.
