Part 2 of this series of Sci-Tech articles, based on the author's doctoral studies of the industrially important mercerizing and other swelling treatments of cotton, discussed similar studies with sulphuric acid. This part is on detailed studies using hydrochloric acid for hydrolysis under more drastic conditions. Mercerizing process stood the test of time since its first commercial application as early as in 1889 and is even today considered as an essential processing step for cotton to improve some of it physical, aesthetic and dyeing properties. Swelling treatments and hydrolytic studies also continue to be useful means to unravel the supermolecular structure of many fibrous materials.
