Part 1 of these studies, already published as Sci-Tech 61 in Colourage introduced the subject after touching upon the technological importance of swelling treatments on cotton, the most glaring example being Mercerizing. These physicochemical studies help to unravel the supermolecular fine structure of cotton and its influence on both physical properties such as tensile, comfort and aesthetic ones and chemical technologies like dyeing, printing and finishing carried out aimed at enhancing its utility and value addition. This work formed part of doctoral studies of the author conducted at ATIRA, Ahmedabad under the guidance of late Dr. P.C. Mehta.
