Parts Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅵ, Ⅶ, Ⅷ and Ⅸ in this series on ITMA '99 Paris, published in the previous nine issues of COLOURAGE have dealt with machines for preparatory processing & bleaching, batch wise dyeing, continuous dyeing, printing, finishing stenters, shrinking machines, relaxation shrinking machines & decatising machines, shearing machines & singeing machines and raising machines & brushing machines for woven fabrics. Part Ⅹ deals with emerizing machines, also known as sueding machines or peach finishing machines. Emerizing machines produce a soft, fluffy and unique fabric surface enhancing thereby not only the fabric feel and appearance but also its aesthetic and sales value. The latest emerizing machines are versatile to produce the desired effects on any and every fabric. Latest improvements observed in these machines are aimed at a better quality and uniformity of finish through new emerizing rollers and their working combinations, fabric tension control and guidance, proper seam management along with automation and computer control of working parameters and their memory for repeat production at any time. Special attention is given for cleaning of the ernerized fabric surface and noise reduction in cases of noisy slat rolls. Machines are generally of drum type but there was a flat machine under display. Although emerizing is considered as a dry surface finishing process, machines for wet emerizing or wet sueding heralded their entry in this exhibition. These wet emerizing machines can give additional properties like higher softness and dye fading effects. This process is claimed to give reduced fabric strength losses by virtue of its more superficial abrading and less fibre removal. These machines look promising as they can also work as dry emerizing machines. The abrading material, generally used in these machines, is of synthetic diamond and its abrading surface being finer, it has almost a wear-free and long working life. There is an introduction of flexible emerizing or sueding wire as an exciting replacement for the conventional sand paper. These special wires claim to give uniform sueding all over the fabric, a long working life, better fabric strength retention and elimination of the common abrasion damage to the fabric.
