According to a 2019 Pew Research Study, roughly six-in-ten U.S. adults say they do not think it is possible to go through daily life without having data collected about them by companies or the government. Most also feel they have little or no control over how these entities use their personal information. Additionally, only 63% of Americans say they understand very little or nothing at all about the laws and regulations that are currently in place to protect their data privacy (Auzier, Raine, Anderson, Perrin, Kumar & Turner, 2019). Collectively, the research points to mounting concerns about users unease, felt mistrust, and general confusion about how to assess the benefits of data collection in relation to the numerous, and growing, concerns of how data has become commodified and even used to exploit.
