Winning or loosing a game is usually just a matter of choosing the right strategy, i.e., the chances of winning are in general determined by the way the opponents react, when confronted with some given game position. Since the development of the game depends upon making decisions based on successive situations on the playing board for example, it is clear that strategies may be described by binary decision trees, where the nodes are couples (s,a), with s a game situation (a test) and a an action to be taken, depending on whether s is met or not. More concretely, the first component s describes some aspect of the game to be checked, e.g., the position of a particular piece or a combination of them on a chess-board, the number of matches in one or several piles, the position of the crosses and naughts (or some of them) in some matrix, .... In each node of the decision tree (the "strategy tree"), one has to verify whether the condition s is met. Depending on whether it is or not, some action then has to be undertaken then. This action might be determined by a (say: move a certain piece, pick certain matches, add a cross, ...) or might amount to check another pattern. Of course, all of this may be determined by a itself depending on the type of game and the way the game and its underlying strategy is encoded.
