There is a battle royal raging in the consumer-electronics business over whom, if anyone, will control access to digital media content and the various devices that make up the connected household. Two of the world's largest high-tech companies-lntel Corp. and Microsoft Corp.-say they have solutions for folks who own a room, or house, full of devices that don't get along. The two firms have launched ambitious programs that they say will bring order to the living room, the way computers revolutionized the office. This time, they want to make it easier for consumers to organize movies, music, and TV shows, while shuttling that media around the home. It's a "smart house" vision that's modeled on Bill Gates' own Seattle-area mansion, minus the groveling servants.
