What on earth was Honeywell thinking when, in the 1960s, the company concocted the nifty if preposterous H316 Kitchen Computer? The thing weighed 150 pounds, was the size of an office copier, and cost more than $10,000―this for a 2.5-megahertz, 4-kilobyte box that came with buiit-in recipes, a cookbook, and, the ultimate high-tech luxury, an apron! In 1969, the same year Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon's surface, Neiman Marcus planted the H316 on the cover of its catalog. The tagline: "If she can only cook as well as Honeywell can compute." Not exactly a giant leap for mankind.
