In January 2016 new regulatory requirements come into force under which container ships must provide a fire-fighting system for containers stowed on deck. This is in response to a number of shipboard fires on container ships that have started within containers, but without the means to extinguish them they have spread and sometimes caused extensive damage, or worse. In response to this requirement Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) has developed its Unitor XFlow fire-fighting system for container ships. The system comprises the Unitor XFlow mobile water monitor and the Unitor XFlow water mist lance that comply with revised Solas regulations and are type-approved. They have been designed particularly to tackle fires on ships carrying containers on deck.
