摘要

1. Taro Aso, a former foreign affairs minister and the secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is likely to become the next prime minister, following the surprise resignation of Yasuo Fukuda. 2. Mr Aso is expected to call an early general election in October or November. The government coalition is expected to lose its two-thirds majority, but it should be able to hold on to a simple majority. 3. Relations with North Korea will remain tense, as Japan struggles to receive a full accounting for the 17 Japanese citizens who were kidnapped by North Korean agents in the 1970s and early 1980s. 4. Given the economy's vulnerability to weak domestic demand, the Bank of Japan (BOJ, the central bank) will delay the next increase in its target for the overnight call rate until the second half of 2009.
