The White Horse: A Reformulation of Bateson's Typology of Learning

摘要

Bateson, anthropologist, queried the forms of learning and introduced us to deutero-learning. Bateson, system logician, constructed a logic-based typology of learning/change processes. Bateson, psychologist, suggested the power and the danger of third order learning. I argue that his typology, while immensely evocative, added to the confusion in the learning theories he aimed at resolving. I argue that learning LII and LIII are not distinct types only of use: LII changes and stabilizes; LIII is a path of continuous change. These re-characterizations elucidate the divergent paths of LIII, one following a hierarchical logic, the other a transformation of the psyche.
