With water scarcity becoming a real concern, dairy businesses such as Miiller recognise that not only is water a precious resource, but that it can be harnessed again. Last year, Mueller collaborated with UK-based Aquabio to build a wastewater treatment and water reuse plant at the company's Severnside Dairy in Gloucester, UK. The plant, which came into production last year, treats 2.9 million litres of wastewater daily. Around 60 per cent of this water, some 1.5 million litres per day, is processed to meet private water supply regulations, and as such the water can be reintroduced into the production process. As a result, Miiller has been able to reduce both its mains water and sewer discharge costs.
