Geographic information systems (GIS) are becoming increasingly popular among corporate knowledge workers. Supported by online and CD-ROM databases, GIS can be an especially powerful information-management tool for certain business applications, including site location, strategic decision making, and marketing. Because GIS maps data, it lets knowledge workers visualize, organize, and analyze information in ways not possible with text-oriented systems. According to GIS WORLD magazine, "The geographic technology industry exploded in 1996, enticing big players in other technology markets to enter the GIS market." In an Outlook '97 feature, a member of the magazine's editorial advisory board commented that "the involvement of larger technology companies indicates the maturing of the geographic technology industry as it becomes a part of mainstream, mass-market information technology." Another board member predicted that "GIS literally will become a household word in corporations and communities throughout the advanced nations."
