摘要

Sixty years is a long time in the life of an individual, but a very short time in the life of a nation. In the area that is Pakistan today, the people and their ancestors have had no experience of any other system of government except authoritarian rule. It should therefore occasion no surprise if democracy has not taken root in this unfertile soil. Moreover, Pakistan was not created as the result of a struggle by its people for democracy. A brilliant lawyer of impeccable character argued a case successfully for a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Subcontinent and the narrow mind-edness of the Hindu leadership convinced the Muslims that they would' not get fair treatment or opportunities in a united India. It is thus that Pakistan was bom.
